One of the things that really blew my mind when taking physiology classes in massage school was learning that a muscle will start contracting when the brain tells it to, but won't stop contracting unless the brain sends a separate signal telling to to stop.
A muscle isn't like a machine gun where, as soon as you take your finger off the trigger, it stops firing. It's more like a light switch, where, if you want to turn it off, you have to make a separate, specific effort to make it stop.
I'm sure most of you were taught as a kid to switch the lights off in a room before leaving, because it's so easy to forget.
Likewise, our brains can often fire muscles all over our bodies, and forget to turn them off before moving onto something else, and that's one way we can end up with chronic tension in our bodies.
That's one reason why massage can be so helpful in relieving chronic tension and discomfort, because external touch on a tight muscle can basically tell the brain, "Hey, you forgot about this light switch here! You need to turn it off."
Whenever a massage client here in Oklahoma City tells me, "Wow, I had no idea I had tension there," I know that's exactly what's been happening with that person's body.
Over time you can develop awareness to be better in touch with your own body and be better at hitting flicking off all the switches when you're done with them.
